SANDALWOOD POUR FEMME NO. 1 CUVÉE RESERVE 2006
Ingredient Story
Sandalwood is one of the oldest known perfume materials. Its use can be traced back for almost 4000 years. Santalum of the family Santalaceae, has about 25 species of trees that are found from India and Malaysia through Australia to islands of the Pacific and the oil is steam distilled from the chipped or powdered heart wood of the tree.
The depletion of sandalwood trees in the world is a source of concern and many would argue that a ban on the use of the natural essential oil should be imposed to conserve the species. On the other hand the opportunity for sustainable development is being addressed and it would be a great loss not only to the perfumers’ palette but also to those communities where the cultivation of sandalwood is an important source of revenue if this approach to conservation was adopted. We think that judicious use of this essential oil by our industry is the way forward and we will continually monitor reports on the stock situation and the ecological impact of oil production.
Our 2005 vintage used sandalwood oil from Santalum album harvested in the Mysore region of India and at Club Parfumerie we have sought to ensure that the Mysore sandalwood used in our fragrances is ethically sourced. Over the past year we have also been looking at alternative sustainable sources of sandalwood oil from other regions (even though our usage in global terms is miniscule). From the available sources we have selected Santalum austrocaledonicum var. austrocaledonicum as an alternative to Santalum album. To reduce our usage of Mysore sandalwood we have used a blend with Santalum austrocaledonicum in our 2006 vintage of SANDALWOOD NO. 1 fragrances.
Santalum austrocaledonicum is considered to be the most reminiscent of Mysore sandalwood. It is indigenous to New Caledonia and Vanuatu where in folklore they distinguish two ‘varieties’ of tree. The ‘man’ tree is tall and needs pruning to produce good heart wood whilst the ‘woman’ tree is shorter, wider, producing good heart wood and many fruits.
The heart wood, which is the source of the essential oil, is only found in mature trees. This wood is also used in crafts, incense making and religious ceremonies.
The odour of sandalwood oil from Santalum album has little top note with a distinctive, typically sweet and woody character. In comparison Santalum austrocaledonicum is a little lighter with a slightly smoky aspect.
This difference can be perceived more in the heart of the SANDALWOOD POUR FEMME NO. 1 CUVÉE RESERVE 2006, our latest vintage, than in SANDALWOOD POUR HOMME NO. 1 CUVÉE RESERVE 2006 where the inherent smokiness of guaiacwood oil conceals this aspect of the new introduction.
